We know for sure now though that using the AZ algorithm as published will give you a shit endgame player that is nothing like the published games. That's why verifying results is important indeed, and nobody can verify AlphaZero results. Leela's initial nets couldn't evaluate basic endgames correctly, until someone from the AlphaZero team clarified that the algorithm described in the published papers was just plain wrong wrt. Leela's T30 could quite handily beat SF8 while being trained in a manner nearly identical to A0's, so I would very strongly disagree with that assessment. After Tang's victory at hyperbullet, bullet and rapid there can be no more discussion, right? If you're still not convinced, we'll play rapid with Tang getting knight odds. Surely a win by Tang confirms our theory that he's the best player in the world. To keep the analogy: we now let Tang play Nakamura in bullet but Nakamura's puts a blindfold on instead. It's a good thing A0 beat SF at multiple TCs. That requires a test at the strongest configuration, which is exactly what was avoided.

It shows that there wasn't one handicap that craters performance, but it doesn't answer at all what the best program is. Using SF8 (almost all the matches in the second paper) and adding a book, etc. using SF9 (a year old by the time the paper came out!) but keeping everything else the same. The follow-up paper just showed that fixing one of the problems at a time still allowed it to win.
